Many people import CAD files into SketchUp and then wonder why they don't behave as expected. The two most common issues with CAD files are crossing lines and unconnected lines which are just part of the CAD file. If you are trying to trace over a CAD file to create surfaces and it isn't working do two things. First, make sure the CAD file isn't grouped or that you are working within the group. Second, look for crossing and unconnected lines. They are usually pretty small. Finding and fixing these lines will often solve the problem.
In general make sure your CAD files are really clean and that you only import the information you need. For example, in your CAD program turn off layers like electrical, furniture or dimensions and save a version with only the bare floor-plan. Import that simplified CAD file for more efficient use in SketchUp. |
